Environmental Science

Humankind has always considered the environment as a resource and has exploited it since the advent of humans on planet Earth. In doing this, humans have created serious problems to the environment to the extent that our very existence on this planet together with other life forms is threatened. Issues of the environment are enormous as well as complex and can be witnessed at the local, national, regional and global levels. The enormity and complexity of environmental issues call for the training of the right calibre of experts who will be competent to understand and deal with problems of the environment by identifying the problems and carrying out relevant researches to address them. All this will contribute to safeguarding the resources of the environment for posterity. This constitutes an important dimension to consider in any programme to produce environmental experts.

The programme proposed is structured to achieve a broad range of specialization, allowing prospective students with diverse academic backgrounds and field experiences to enroll according to their specific interests. The programme is designed to provide a wide range of learning experiences to students to enable them to understand the labyrinthine nature of the issues of the environment before they specialize. In this regard the current programme is unique. Other programmes offered elsewhere focus on specific aspects of the environment. In spite of the fact that all these other aspects of environmental training attract students, products of the department always want to come back to do the graduate programme in the department. Currently, there are very few avenues for progression in environmental studies in the country to absorb all students with the requisite qualification.

The ultimate aim of the programme is to produce high calibre environmental science experts (managers and scientists), who are capable of tackling environmental problems, for service in industry, academia, governance and civil society.
